Born on August 3, 1943, in Manila, Philippines, Angel was the seventh of nine children born to Guat Sy, Sr. and Wan Sia. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Rudy, Rosa,
Felisa, Gregorio, and Benito.
Angel lived a remarkable life defined by intellect, perseverance, adventure, and deep devotion to his family. A gifted student from an early age, he attended Adamson University in Manila, where he became known among classmates for his exceptional talent in mathematics and academic excellence. His ability to absorb lectures without taking notes led to high performance in even the most difficult examinations.
Driven by a lifelong commitment to learning, Angel pursued graduate studies in Chemical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. Throughout his career, he designed polystyrene and polyethylene plants and systems, with work spanning New Jersey, Florida, and Texas, as well as projects in Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Singapore. His innovative mindset led to the development of 13 patents, reflecting both his technical expertise and lifelong curiosity. He retired as a Technical Director at ABB Group in 2008.
In New York, Angel met Frances Cabrales, whom he married in 1972. Together they built a family and raised four children: Jen, Valerie, Tina, and Alan. Determined to provide opportunities for his children and support their success, Angel balanced a demanding international engineering career with a life centered around family, conversation, laughter, music, travel, and good food – Ang sarap!
Houston/Katy, Texas became the place he called home for many
decades.
In 2010, Angel married Welma Mangomma. Together they established homes in both Houston and Manila, dividing their time between the United States and the Philippines during their retirement years. As the family patriarch with a nickname “Lovable King”, his wisdom was solicited by extended family members across both countries. Many strived to emulate his discipline, wit, and inquisitiveness.
Though analytical by nature, Angel embraced life’s pleasures wholeheartedly. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis, later developing a love for golf. He savored lively meals with family and friends and, in his later years, acquired a particular fondness for sweetsop fruit. This even prompted a trip to Vancouver’s Granville Island Market given its limited availability in the States. Travel became one of Angel’s favorite hobbies, especially enjoying visits to Niagara Falls, Japan, and London.
Music was a constant source of joy throughout his life. Karaoke nights were rarely complete without Angel enthusiastically singing Elvis Presley’s “My Way”, along with songs by The
Beatles, Freddy Fender, and Adele. Family members will especially remember his enjoyment of singing competition shows, Hallmark movies, spirited conversations about the stock market, and
his unforgettable “magic finger” story that never failed to entertain, amuse, and occasionally bewilder those around him.
Above all, Angel’s legacy lives on through the family he loved deeply and the generations he helped shape through sacrifice, hard work, resilience, and unwavering support.
He is survived by his wife, Welma Sy; his children and their families: Jennifer Sy Shah, Jaideep Shah, and Atish Shah; Valerie Sy; Tina Sy and Eric Carey; and Alan Sy, Cung Sy, Hope Sy, and Jack Sy; former wife Frances Sy; his sister, Anita Sy; his brothers, Guat Sy, Jr. and Fernando “Ado” Sy; his beloved nephews, Ben Sy and Vincent Dy Cruz, and their families; along with many extended family members and lifelong friends across the United States and the Philippines.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
