Philip Sonny Oboh-Ogbeide

With grateful hearts, we celebrate the life and legacy of Phillip Sonny Oboh-Ogbeide, a devoted father, grandfather, entrepreneur, and man of unwavering faith, who peacefully entered eternal rest on June 19, 2026, in Houston, Texas, one day before his 72nd birthday. Although our hearts are heavy with his passing, we rejoice in a life defined by perseverance, kindness, and love. He was 71 years old.

Phillip was born on June 20, 1954, in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria, to Johnson Ogbeide and Otubo Ogbeide. He was raised in Ekpoma, where he developed the quiet strength, humility, and gentle spirit that would define him throughout his life. He attended Western Boys High School, also known as Airewele High School, where he cultivated his love for football (soccer), automobiles, and music, interests that remained with him throughout his life.

As the only son in his family, Phillip was dearly loved and affectionately spoiled by his parents, especially his mother. His older sisters adored him, and their love for him was evident throughout his childhood. One of the family's favorite stories, often shared with laughter, was that while many children spent their days helping on the family farm, Phillip somehow managed to avoid farm work. Instead, he enjoyed dressing in the fashionable clothes his older sister lovingly brought home from her travels abroad and looking his very best while everyone else headed to the farm. His family would jokingly say that he got away with it because he was his mother's only son and held a special place in her heart. It was a story that perfectly captured his charm and the deep love his family had for him. Ironically, the little boy who preferred staying away from the farm would later earn both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Agricultural Science, one of life's beautiful full circle moments.

As a young man, Phillip possessed a remarkable sense of adventure and a genuine love for travel. During the 1970s and early 1980s, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, exploring different countries, experiencing new cultures, and creating memories that remained with him throughout his life. At a time when international travel was uncommon for many, Phillip embraced every opportunity to see the world. His travels broadened his perspective, deepened his appreciation for different people and cultures, and reflected the curiosity, confidence, and adventurous spirit that defined his character. Whether traveling abroad, admiring classic automobiles, or discovering new places, Phillip approached life with curiosity and an appreciation for beauty, craftsmanship, and new experiences.

Phillip began his professional career with the Bendel State Water Board in Benin City, Nigeria, where he helped support the delivery of safe drinking water to communities through the capture, treatment, transfer, and distribution of water to urban and peri urban areas. Recognized for his dedication, intelligence, and exemplary work ethic, he was selected by his employer for a sponsored educational opportunity in the United States during the 1980s. This distinguished opportunity reflected the confidence his employers had in his abilities and marked the beginning of a life changing journey.

His educational path began at Alabama A&M University before continuing at Huston Tillotson University. He ultimately earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Agricultural Science from Prairie View A&M University. Although he was expected to return to Nigeria after completing his studies, life led him to establish his home in the United States, where he built a successful career and lovingly raised his family.

Phillip's entrepreneurial spirit eventually led him into the automotive industry, where he founded Phillip Motor. As an automotive entrepreneur, he specialized in purchasing quality vehicles at auction, restoring and reconditioning them, and helping customers find dependable transportation. His passion for automobiles, combined with honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic, earned him the trust and respect of countless customers and friends.

More than any title or accomplishment, Phillip will be remembered for the man he was. He was loving, trustworthy, dependable, gentle, humble, and deeply family oriented. He was a man of quiet strength who avoided conflict, believed in treating others with kindness, and consistently placed the needs of his loved ones before his own. His calm demeanor, generous heart, and unwavering reliability left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Phillip found joy in life's simple blessings. He loved football (soccer), admired beautiful automobiles, and had a deep appreciation for music. He especially enjoyed listening to Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston, and many reggae artists whose music brought him peace and happiness.

His faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devoted Catholic, Phillip was a faithful member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Houston, Texas, where he found spiritual strength, fellowship, and comfort. His faith guided his actions and reflected the compassion, humility, and generosity with which he lived each day.

Phillip was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Johnson Ogbeide and Otubo Ogbeide, and his sisters, Theresa Ogbeide and Mary Ogbeide.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his children, Beverly Ogbeide, Philip Jr. Ogbeide, and Christopher Ogbeide; his beloved grandchildren, Savannah Joi and Sienna Mene Ejegi; his sister, Celestina Ogbeide; his former wife, Sarah Irabor; his cherished nephew, Emmanuel Sawyer; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, and all who were blessed to know him.

Phillip's life was a remarkable journey of faith, perseverance, courage, and love. From his humble beginnings in Ekpoma, Nigeria, to his travels across Europe, his pursuit of higher education in the United States, and his success as a businessman and devoted father, he lived a life marked by determination and quiet excellence. He taught those around him the value of hard work, integrity, humility, unconditional love for family, and the importance of treating every person with dignity and respect.

His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be remembered not only for the places he traveled, the degrees he earned, or the business he built, but for the quiet kindness he extended, the sacrifices he made for his family, and the steady example he set through a life of humility, faith, and perseverance.
