Adele Hicks Moss, age 93, passed away peacefully at The Barclay of Tuckahoe, in Richmond, VA on June 19, 2026. She was born in Raleigh, NC on November 23, 1932, daughter of the late Harry Thomas Hicks and Sara Harrison Hicks. Adele is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Charles A. Moss, Jr. (Charlie) of Birmingham, Alabama.
Raised in Raleigh, NC, Adele attended Saint Mary’s School and continued her studies at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She then went on to get her Masters of Music at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. At the Conservatory, she was tapped into the Pi Kappa Lambda Honorary Music Society. After graduating in 1957, Adele married Charlie Moss from Gastonia, NC and moved to Birmingham, Alabama for the start of Charlie’s architectural career. Adele immersed herself in civic and cultural activities. She was on the faculty of Birmingham Southern College, taught private piano lessons, was a music director and choir director at several Birmingham churches, President of the PTA of Crestline School, President of the Charity League, on the board of many organizations including, the University of Alabama Hearing and Speech, Mountain Brook School System and the Girl Scouts of America.
Adele, The Queen or Grandele, to her Grandchildren, was a special lady with twinkling blue eyes. Standing erect at 5’ 11” tall, she was always considered a leader. If ever there was someone you would want beside you in life, it was Adele. Always incredibly positive, full of life and interests, with a wicked sense of humor, she was there for you. Even to the end she could make you laugh with her entertaining stories.
Adele was a devoted bridge player who had a wonderful group of bridge friends in Birmingham. She was a voracious reader, she would check out 10 to 12 books a month from the mobile library that would come to the Barclay and would return them all read. She had a keen interest in politics and current events. She would surprise us with her knowledge of the latest pop culture and particularly pop singers, she once said, “You mean you haven’t heard of Shaboozy?” And she would love to introduce herself to new acquaintances as Adele, like the performer and then sing, “Hello”. And sports! There was not one sporting event that she did not love or follow, and she knew her facts and could discuss them with anyone. Golf, tennis, baseball and of course, football, “Roll Tide”!!! Her Children remember that she was the neighborhood mother who was always giving out hugs and bandaids. You could find her out in the backyard in her jeans and Keds tennis shoes throwing the baseball or football to warm up her two boys before a game.
She loved with all her heart. Honest, compassionate, fiercely loyal, she was a best friend to many, a cheerleader and therapist, and Our Rock.
She is survived by her three children Dr. Charles A. Moss, III (Fay) of Nashville, TN, Torrey Moss Munford (Charlie) of Richmond, VA and Jordan Harrison Moss of St. Louis, MO., along with her six grandchildren Blair Munford von Ahnen (John), Broun Munford, Chad Moss, MaryLauren Moss Hicks (Ross), Addie Moss and Jordan Moss and one great granddaughter Sadie Hicks. She loved them all dearly. She also leaves behind two special best friends, Becky Watson and Betty Schreiber, both from Birmingham. The family would also like to thank Natasha and Julie from the Barclay for their wonderful care.
There will be a family internment at Independent Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local SPCA.
