Arthur E. Hudgins Jr

“Gene,” 79, of Henrico, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, March 3, 2019, surrounded by his family at home. He was born on January 22, 1940, to Arthur Eugene Hudgins, Sr., and Mary (Moncrief) Hudgins. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Gene was a graduate of Murphy High School, where he was known as “The Brute” on the football field. Gene also attended the University of Georgia. He worked as a construction superintendent at Schindler Elevator Corporation for 42 years. Gene was an avid golfer, loved the outdoors, and never met a tree he didn’t want to cut down. He is survived by the love of his life of 59 years, Jean Fowler Hudgins. He is also survived by his sons Michael Hudgins (Deborah), Mark Hudgins (Lisa), and his daughter Deborah Hudgins Nester (Joseph); he was known as “Poppy” to his nine grandchildren: Ashley Hudgins Gatewood (Lance), Tiffanie Gray Brock (Chris), Shannon Hudgins Rothwell (Brad), Tony Hudgins (Christine), Brittanie Aliceburg Dorsainville (Jesse), Jessica Hudgins, Courtney Hudgins, Jayme Aliceburg, and Nichole Hudgins; five great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters; two brothers James Hudgins (Annette) of Michigan, Jack Hudgins (Dot) of Ohio, and sister Mary Anne Hudgins Morris (Bob) of Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2019, at Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, Virginia. There will be light refreshments immediately following the service. The family will receive friends until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
