
Charles Kemper Lorraine, Sr., 87, a southern gentleman of intelligence, accomplishment, humor and integrity, died peacefully surrounded by his family on July 28, 2014, in Fort Myers, Fla. He has joined his loving parents, Alfred and Louise Lorraine; and his much admired brother, Alfred Jr., who was lost in action in 1944, in eternal life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Elizabeth Farinash Lorraine and her sons, Joe and Tom; his four children, Catherine, Elizabeth, Martha and Kemp; their spouses, Hank, George, Jim and Renee; his grandchildren, Daniel, Jonathan, Matthew,Michele, Lauren, Jessie, James and Michael; and great-grandson, Connor. Kemper's family expresses profound gratitude to his friend and physician Michael Tucker, M.D., for his compassion, humor and loving care. Born on November 3, 1926, Kemper was raised in the Ginter Park neighborhood of Richmond, Va. He loved to read and as a boy made many memorable trips to the Ginter Park Library. An avid athlete, he was a member of the Thomas Jeffersom High School State Championship basketball team. He matriculated at Hampden Sydney College, later interrupting his studies to enlist in the United States Navy. After military service, he resumed his studies at Hampden Sydney, graduating in 1949. He married Shirley Hillstead and together they raised four loving and devoted children. Kemper was the proud proprietor of A.L. Lorraine Hardware in the heart of Carytown and a member of the Henrico County Board of Supervisors. He and his wife, Elizabeth retired in 1996, moving to the southwest coast of Florida, where he enjoyed his lifelong love of the water and the beauty of nature, and where he turned his attention to philanthropic pursuits. His particular focus was upon the present and future success of Hampden Sydney College and its students. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are welcome to make donations to the Alfred Lorraine Scholarship at Hampden Sydney College, P.O. Box 637, Hampden Sydney, Va. 23943. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 11 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church, 3601 Seminary Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227, followed by a reception at the church. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
