Durham, Dorothy “Dot” Gay (Harris) of Henrico has gone to meet her Jesus, on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. She was born Monday, December 2, 1929, to Allen and Thelma Harris of Drewryville, Southampton County, VA. She was married to William “Bill” Durham, of Richmond, for 62 years. The couple had one son, C. Allen Durham, who of Richmond. Dorothy attended the Southampton County Public Schools, prior to attending Radford College (University), where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics. Afterwards, she taught Home Economics at King William High School; later, she worked for several years in the Plant Records Department, Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company. Mrs. Durham was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Glen Allen, and had previously been members of Hebron Baptist Church, Southampton County, VA, First Baptist, Radford, VA, Ginter Park Baptist and Derbyshire Baptist, both of Richmond. Her whole life was a continual outpouring of love and caring for her family and all those with whom she came in contact. Even though she had been trained in the science of Home Economics, she hated cooking and would accept any invitation to eat the fare of someone else. Sewing was an entirely different matter - she loved it. Even, now, one could picture her, hunched over the whirling sewing machine, no matter what hour of the night it might be. If she had chosen, she could have been a mechanic of almost any craft. She was skilled with the use of tools, and could fix almost anything, with which she was confronted. Her funeral services will be held 2pm Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Mount Vernon Memorial Park & Mausoleum. Family’s request is that service and internment be private. Condolences may be offered at woodyfuneralhomeparham.com.
