Obituary of Edith May Dutcher Carter
“The Lord will keep you from all harm - he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:7-8 Edith Dutcher Carter was born on March 12, 1924 in Port Chester, NY blessing the home of Salvationist parents, Wesley and Clara Dutcher. Edith was dedicated to God under The Salvation Army flag and remembered giving her heart to Jesus at the tender age of five in a decision meeting at Sunday School. As Edith grew, so did her relationship with her Lord and Savior. It was during a Young People’s Councils in Mount Vernon, NY on April 29, 1939 that Edith sensed the Calling of the Holy Spirit to full-time Officership. She felt overwhelmed and unprepared to answer and therefore, chose to begin a career. Edith became a valued and respected employee at Fawcett Publication Corp but the Holy Spirit continued to guide Edith to the path of Officership in The Salvation Army. In September 1948, Edith entered the School for Officer Training with the Peacemakers session of cadets. Her instructors described her as “very sincere and spiritual. She is most helpful and supportive of others.” Edith was Commissioned on June 20, 1949 and reported to her first appointment in Herkimer, NY. Other appointments then followed in Irvington, Newark, Jersey City, Hackensack and Asbury Park, NJ. Our Lord still held another special plan for Edith’s life when she met and married her sweetheart, handsome 2nd Lieutenant Albert Carter. Edith and Albert were joined in marriage and shared ministry on July 21, 1956. In the years that followed, the Carters welcomed the blessing of four beautiful children, Shirley, Albert David, Cathy and Lois. After nineteen years of marriage and serving their Lord side-by-side in The Salvation Army, Major Albert Carter was Promoted to Glory on October 19, 1975. Mrs. Major Edith Carter retired from active ministry in 1977 from her last appointment as Associate Director at Booth Memorial Home in Pittsburgh, Pa. In the early morning hours of September 22, 2020, Mrs. Major Edith Carter received her Promotion to Glory and is now reunited with her dear husband, Major Albert Carter and their children, Albert David and Shirley. Together they stand rejoicing in the presence of their Lord and Savior.
