Edward L. Kurtz Sr.

KURTZ, Edward Louis, 86, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2014 after a brief illness. He was a very kind-hearted gentleman, who enriched the lives of everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. and Mary Dunlavey Kurtz; his brothers, Robert E. Jr. and Frederick C. Kurtz; and his grandson, Edward L. Kurtz III. Ed was a loving husband to Carroll Turner Kurtz for 59 years; devoted father of Page Kurtz Grace (Jack) and Edward Louis Kurtz Jr. (Linda); proud grandfather of Kevin, Brian and Rachel Grace, Mary Claire and Alexander Kurtz, who will forever cherish his love. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Kurtz Somma; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School; served in the U.S. Army Air Corps; proud graduate of the University of Richmond School of Business; member and past President Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at U of R; member Beta Gamma Sigma Commerce Honor Society; member Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society; longtime President U of R School of Business Alumni Association; retired Senior VP from Fidelity Bankers Life Insurance; Board of Directors - Institute of Home Office Underwriters; Board of Directors - Medical Information Bureau; Distinguished Service Award U of R Alumnus; longtime member of River Road Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder; former President and Board of Directors Member of Richmond Country Club. He was an avid golfer with two holes-in-one and longtime baseball coach at Tuckahoe Little League. Sharing his lifelong passion for music, he was music director of Harvey Hudson's Passing Parade radio program for 10 years, providing fond memories to those of his generation and more. The family will receive relatives and friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. A memorial service will be held at River Road Presbyterian Church, 8960 River Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229, on Saturday, June 21, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to River Road Presbyterian Church or to the E.
