I met Kirby in Nov of l966 while he was the manager of Kent Coop in Chestertown, Maryland  and I had just moved to Chestertown to manage the local Pet. Coop.
I soon realized that I was in the company of a likable , fun loving southern gentlemen. I also realized that he was quite knowledgeable as well as professional in the work place. This fellow by the name of Kirby Pollard
simply stated was just a rare fine.  Our paths parted in later years, but
not our friendship.  Over the last several yrs. we have had many serious
conversations , exchanged a lot of nonsense and just SHOT THE BULL.

Several months ago I said to Kirby, I hate to say this, but you know something
I Love you Kirby.  Kirby responded with a mix of humor and friendship. Louis
I love you too. What a rare fine.The world could use a lot more people like Kirby, and I look forward to the day when we will meet again.

    My earliest memories are of a special man that was like sunshine in my life, Mr. Pollard (Kirby). He always greeted me with a laugh and a smile. I remember mom and dad would ask, Jimmy do you want to go see the Pollard's? And I would jump at the chance. I was trying to explain how I feel about Mr. Pollard to my wife and it is hard to put into words. He was a kind, loving man, with a tall and strong frame. 
    So I ask myself why did he make such an impact on me and how do we measure a life's value? I believe a life well lived is measured by the joy and love we pass on to others. So I would ask you to take a moment and think of those people in your life, that you would aspire to become. Those special people that make the world a better place with just a smile. Special rare individuals like Mr. Pollard that want us to be happy and enjoy a wonderful life. If you ask me who is at the top of my list, in an instant I would say Mr. Pollard!  I can hear his laugh and see his smile today, burned in my memory in a place reserved for only the most special people, those worthy of love! Godspeed Mr. Pollard. Congrats on a life well lived from one of the many people who absolutely adore you.
Funny, as I know if he read this he would laugh and say, come on now, who are you talking about and chuckle?
I would say, You Mr. Pollard, it's all about you, and it is all true!
Then he would just smile.

     As I began my career with Southern States, in 1963, Kirby was one of my "Training Managers", for a short period.  I learned right off that he always had a cool head, a warm smile and a good sense of humor.  He never varied from this in the 52 years that I have known him.  He was one of the "Good Guys".
