GRANTHAM, Frank Holmes, of Gasburg, Va., passed away Friday, January 18, 2019, at the age of 90. Frank was born in Sledge, Miss., and joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18. He married his sweetheart, Juanita, at 24. They raised three children and celebrated 66 years together.
Frank proudly served his country for 28 years and rose from enlisted man to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. The Navy allowed a young sailor to see the world, and he even sailed "Around The Horn" aboard the USS Ranger. During his career, his family lived many places, including Florida, Rhode Island and Virginia.
Eventually, Frank and Juanita retired to their lake house in Gasburg, Va. He treasured Lake Gaston and enjoyed fishing and water-skiing with his kids there. Frank was a great story teller who never met a stranger. His welcoming smile and corny wit always brought much laughter to anyone around him. He loved his wife, his family and his cookies, which he was happy to share when we caught him eating them.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank H. Grantham; and his mother, Miriam Smith Robertson. He is survived by his loving wife, Juanita Johnson Grantham; and beloved children, Frank Marshall Grantham of Cumberland, Md., Joseph Alan (Jackie) Grantham of High Point, N.C., Sandra Grantham (Dib) Oglesby of Goochland, Va.
A funeral service with military honors will be held Friday, January 25, 2019, at 1 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home-Parham, 1771 N. Parham Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229. A reception will follow the service.
