

SLEDGE, George Otho "Gus," 79, of Richmond, passed away Friday, March 6, 2015, at Retreat Hospital from complications of PSP, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Williams Sledge; daughters, Susan Sledge Vaughan (Tripp) and Sally Ann Sledge (Gary Barker); grandchildren, Liz and Georgia Vaughan. As a faithful servant of River Road Church, Baptist, he fulfilled many roles, including church treasurer and caretaker of the memorial garden.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jesse Herbert Sledge and Roselia Vaughan Sledge; siblings, Vaughan Sledge Blantz, Herbert Jesse Sledge and Ann Sledge Smith. A graduate of Henry Clay High School and Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, the Glee Club, and the Virginia Air National Guard. He had a 34 year career with Philip Morris USA, including time in New York, retiring as Director of Distribution. Gus was active on the boards of Glenbrooke Hills, Mooreland Commons in Henrico and Lesner Pointe at Virginia Beach. He was a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital and Hospice of Virginia. Pop was a proud grandfather, beach lover, and a gracious, generous host. He entertained guests with piano tunes, and in earlier days, was known to carry his piano to parties in the back of a truck. We will all miss his smile. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 10, 2015, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and a memorial service will be held Thursday. March 12, 2015, at 2 p.m. at River Road Church, Baptist. The family suggests donations be made to River Road Church, Baptist or Hospice of Virginia.
