Herbert Wiesinger MD

On May 4, 2012, Herbert Wiesinger, M.D. departed this world after a lengthy battle with cancer. A Fulbright Scholar at Columbia University after his graduation from the University of Vienna Medical School as their youngest graduate at the time. He became a member of the Richmond Medical Community where he practiced his specialty, Ophthalmology, for 48 years. He was a member of the Medical College of Virginia faculty where he taught for 35 years and attained the rank of Professor of Ophthalmology. He was an integral part of the school’s research project on photocoagulation and laser treatment with his colleagues DuPont Guerry, III and William T. Ham, Jr., both deceased, and in 1961 published the first treatments with this modality on the human eye. He was a member and fellow of every major medical society in his specialty and an honorary member of the Instituto Barraquer of Barcelona, Spain. He was also a life member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition he published numerous medical articles and collaborated in a textbook-atlas of his specialty. He also served as Chief of Staff at the Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital as well as a member of the Board of Directors of this institution for many years, in addition to being the Chairman of the operating room and Laser Committees. Dr. Wiesinger was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Herbert K. Wiesinger, M.D. of Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ilse Maria; and a son, Ronald Wiesinger, M.D. of Bethesda, Maryland. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Second Baptist Church on River Rd.
