
James Francis Steadman passed away on June 6, 2026, in Richmond, Va., after suffering from leukemia. He was the son of Marjorie and James Steadman of Columbia, S.C. He is survived by Susan Hempill Steadman, his wife of 58 years; two sons David (Lindsey)Steadman of Mechanicsville, Va. and James Steadman of Asheville, N.C.; and two granddaughters Sophia and Kathryn Steadman of Mechanicsville, Va.
Francis, a loyal Georgia Tech fan, graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, and then went to Purdue University where he achieved a Master's and Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering.
Francis worked at Exxon Mobile where he worked to acquire patents for Exxon. Then he worked at Ethyl Corporation in Orangeburg, S.C. In 1993 he was promoted to Ethyl Headquarters in Richmond, Va., working with the Fuel Additive Division traveling to refineries over the world, especially in South America.
Francis enjoyed bridge, tennis, the Men's Bible Study group at Third Presbyterian Church, and support of Georgia Tech. After retirement he volunteered in the Chapman's Office of Henrico Jail West as part of The Good News Ministry Program.
Francis was a patient and caring father who believed strongly in following the "Golden Rule". He served as the rock of the family.
The family would like to thank Suncrest Hospice and Discovery Village at the West End for their support in the last weeks of his life.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Third Presbyterian Church at 600 Forest Ave. at 2:00 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Third Presbyterian.
