HUNT, John G., 58, of Richmond, Va., passed away suddenly in Seattle, Washington, July 16, 2018, while on a tandem bike ride with Danny Stokes of Operation Enduring Warrior. Born February 12, 1960, in Burlington, Vt., to the late Bernard P. Hunt and Joan V. Murray. Married to the love of his life in 1984, Charlotte A. Hunt, for 33 years, residing in Richmond, Va. Other survivors include two wonderful sons, Steven J. Hunt (Marcie) of Martinsville, Va. and John G. Hunt Jr. of Richmond; two loving grandchildren, Erica l. Gravely and Ahmad E. Smith of Martinsville; Marj L. Yost of Williamstown, N.J. (sister-in-law); siblings, Bernie P. Hunt (Lisa) of Richmond, Va., Donna M. Hunt (Charlie) of Richmond, Paul B. Hunt (Beth) of Richmond; many nieces, nephews and cousins, along with so many wonderful friends and aquaintances. He was a graduate of Hermitage High School, class of 1979, attended J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 1979 to 1984, where he received the Rifle Expert Badge, the Good Conduct Medal and two Overseas ribbons. He worked in the family business (HUC Inc.) from 1984 to 1987. John, along with his wife, Charlotte and father-in-law, the late Donald J. Yost (1994) of Martinsville. He ran his own underground contruction business (John's General Contracting, Inc.) from 1988 to 1994, when he started suffering from chemical exposure he received while stationed in the Philippines with the Marine Corps. He served from 1988 to 1992 in the Virginia National Guard, where he received the Army Achievement Medal three years in a row, the Good Conduct Medal and an Honorable Discharge. In 2010, while attending his goddaughter's (Claire Clarke) christening in Burlington, Vt., John suffered an episode, which left him completely blind. Still, with determination to not just sit around, John started taking karate lessons with Sam Justice, at the Justice Karate Studio, making a goal to receive his black belt, which he accomplished on December 9, 2017. In the meantime, he participated in Operation Enduring Warrior events, Rugged Maniac Greenbrier and became the Ambassador for OEW. He was also a member of the James M. Slay Detachment #399 of American Legion Post 361. John loved life and his family. He loved people and helping others. John never let anything stop him, having great endurance. John will be truly missed by so many. A memorial service will be held at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Road, on Saturday, July 28, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, online contributions may be made to OEW in John's memory at www.enduringwarrior.org.
