

She was preceded in death by her parents A. Scott Anderson and Ann Curd Anderson. She graduated from St. Catherine’s School and the College of William and Mary with a BA degree in Fine Arts. Katharine was a gifted athlete who especially enjoyed collegiate field hockey, tennis, and golf.
She met her future husband, J. Richard Carling, at William and Mary. They married on November 20, 1965, in Richmond, while her husband was serving a three-year commitment in the United States Navy. In 1968, they moved back to Richmond where she began teaching pre-K children at Reveille United Methodist Church, while her husband started his career in banking.
In 1982, after moving to Roanoke, Virginia, she helped establish the pre-K program at North Cross School and stayed there as a teacher for 12 years. After her respective relocations to Philadelphia and Charlotte with her husband, in 2000, she moved to Callawassie Island in Okatie, South Carolina.
She loved to travel, especially to England and throughout Europe. She also had a passion for flower arranging and started her own business, providing fresh flower arrangements to several of the gated golf communities around Okatie. In 2021, she and her husband moved to Cedarfield, in Richmond, Virginia.
Mrs. Carling was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Richmond; St. John’s Church in Roanoke, Virginia; St. Helena’s Anglican Church in Beaufort, South Carolina; and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Richmond. She was a member of the Junior League and the Society of the Colonial Dames.
Above all, she cherished her family, especially her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Mimi.” She is survived by her husband of 62 years, J. Richard Carling; her son, Christopher Scott (Victoria) Carling; her daughter, Lucy Carling (Charles) Moore; and her grandchildren, Katharine Meriwether Carling, Duncan Scott Carling, Jane Lozier Moore, Edward Lewis Moore, and Carling Ann Moore. She is also survived by her brother, A. Bryce (Moira) Anderson of Yulee, Florida. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ann Miller Anderson (George) Stuckey.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 2:00pm, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Rd, Richmond, VA 23238, with a reception to follow. A private interment will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for family and close family friends. A reception at Cedarfield will be announced in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
