Ms. Kay Warren Lindberg

Kay Warren Lindberg passed away, peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at the age of 89. She was beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, artist, caregiver, and volunteer.

Born on November 8, 1936, in Nassawadox, Virginia, she was the daughter of Rodney Warren and Ida Lee Polk Warren Trower. She attended Northampton High School, William and Mary, and DePaul University Nursing School. As a young woman, she was honored as Miss Townsend and Miss Eastern Shore. She also proudly served her country as a Navy wife.

Her life moved through Virginia, Louisiana, the Philippines, New Jersey, and Rhode Island, was always rooted in love, family, faith, community, and service.

For 17 years, she worked in Radiation Therapy at Saint Mary’s Hospital, where she brought compassion and support to people who walked a path she had also walked. Among her treasured memories walking countless “Relays for Life” and recording “Lean on Me” with breast cancer survivors at Saint Mary’s - a fitting song for someone who spent her life offering strength, hope, and support to others.

Service was woven throughout her life. She volunteered at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden for 16 years. At Trinity United Methodist Church, Kay served as lead usher, co-founded the food bank, and taught Sunday school. Earlier in life, she encouraged and guided young people as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She rescued countless pets and loved her grand and great-grand kitties and doggies, and her friends’ pets. In every role, she quietly made her community kinder, stronger, and more welcoming.

A gifted and prolific botanical artist, Kay found beauty and inspiration in the natural world. She drew everyday for decades. She was a member of the Chickahominy Colored Pencil Artists, Pioneer Stitchers, and Central Virginia Botanical Artists. Her work was exhibited in local libraries, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and other venues throughout Central Virginia. She joyfully joined the artists’ retreat at Nimrod Hall in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A voracious reader, she read hundreds of books in a single year. She loved music, especially Bruce Springsteen, and closely followed baseball, basketball, and tennis, and the news of the world. She volunteered for many years at the polls on election days, and, in her words, she always voted her conscience.

Kay Lindberg will be remembered for her love, service, creativity and optimism. These qualities remained unmistakably hers even at the end of her life and during her most vulnerable moments. She showed those around her that strength can be gentle, that creativity can be a form of love, and that a meaningful life is built through countless acts of care and service.

She is survived by her children Karin Freda, Denise Lindberg and husband David D’Urbano, and Patricia Lindberg; grandchildren Annika Freda, Austen Freda, and Lucia D’Urbano; sister-in-law Jane Warren; niece Laura Bishop and husband Benny Bishop, and nephews Dines Warren, Hallett Latimer and wife Cindy, Dennis Latimer and Betty Ann Latimer. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, sister Wanda Lee Latimer, niece Diane Crystal, and brother Richard Warren.

A service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at 11:00am at Trinity United Methodist Church in Richmond, Virginia.
