Larry dedicated his life to the education of children across the state of Virginia. As Superintendent of Schools in Russell County and Buckingham County he impacted many lives greatly and was named Superintendent of the Year by the state of Virginia multiple times. And as Interim Superintendent of Schools for Orange County, Lynchburg City, Botetourt County and Grayson County he was dearly beloved and received the key to the city of Lynchburg. Larry took great pride in mentoring others. He held a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, a Masters from East Tennessee State University and a Doctor of Education from Virginia Tech.
His true devotion, however, was to his wife Sondra of 48 years. He spoiled her rotten – I know he’s laughing about this statement. He loved her and his son TJ to no end. An avid UT Vols, Cincinnati Reds and Philadelphia Eagles fan, he called TJ almost every day to talk stats and attended countless games with friends and family. And from April-September he and his sister, Reg, commiserated about their abusive relationship with the Cincinnati Reds! In his early years before moving to Russell County he grew up in Kenova, WV and had a passion for trains and O scale model trains. He loved visiting the mountain house, deeply enjoyed traveling and was a devoted member of the Huguenot Road Baptist Church.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, James A. & Dottie Christian Massie. He is survived by his wife Sondra and son TJ (wife Lena) along with his three grandsons Dylan, Fintan and Declan. He is also survived by his cherished sister Rebecca Massie along with his nephew Sean Mitchell and niece Casey Barton.
