

SHEWEY, Linda Cooper, died peacefully at home Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at age 65. Linda was born and raised in Gainesville, Fla. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., with a degree in history, and she earned her masters of art and teaching at Georgia State. She was a teacher in Florida and Georgia and at St. Catherine's in Richmond. She served as a docent for many years at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Reading was her passion, and the knowledge she gained from it served her well throughout her life. In 1986, she appeared on the television game show Jeopardy for three nights. Linda also was an avid Bridge player and played in several groups. She was a member of the Tuckahoe Women's Club. But above all else was her love for her family.
She leaves behind her husband of 44 years, Bill; and children, Kasey White and her husband, Christian, of Alexandria, and James Shewey and his wife, Kathryn, of Richmond; and grandchildren Taryn White and Sadie White. Linda also is survived by her mother, Dorothy Cooper of Gainesville; her sister, Sue Nelson and her husband, Mike, of Jacksonville, Fla.; her aunt, Louverne Hembree of Gainesville; her father-in-law, Fred Shewey of Gainesville; her brother-in-law, Bob Shewey of Gainesville; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Linda was predeceased by her father, James Cooper.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 10, at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., from 4 to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be held for Linda on Monday, April 11, at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Ave. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Dorothy W. Cooper Scholarship, Alachua County School Board Foundation, Gainesville, Fla..
