Born in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Mary Adams White and the late Lindsay Verner White, he spent his early years growing up in Bath, NY. Following his father’s death, Lindsay and his mother moved to Turbeville, Virginia, to be with his mother’s family. He graduated from Turbeville Agricultural High School before proudly serving his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Lindsay was employed by the Virginia Department of Transportation until his retirement. He and his mother moved to Richmond, Virginia, in 1963, where he spent the remainder of his years.
Lindsay had a passion for all things historical, in particular politics and transportation. He has been referred to as a walking encyclopedia because of his extensive knowledge and his ability to bring long forgotten, and often obscure events in history to life. He loved engaging in stimulating conversation, and was also known for his gregarious personality and wit. Lindsay was a devout Christian and long-time member of Skipwith Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. He deeply cared for his loving community of family and friends, and enriching these special relationships became an energizing focus in his golden years.
When his grandparents, uncles and aunt passed away, Lindsay took over as the Adams family historian. His brilliant mind could recall family names and birthdays, wedding dates, christenings, and other celebrations. Lindsay will be especially missed by one group of cousins with whom he reconnected in his later years. He entrusted this group with his storehouse of family photos, lore, and history. They were always amazed at his ability to recount family anecdotes involving grandparents, aunts, uncles, and long-forgotten relatives. Lindsay was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved companion Beverly Owens, and his long-time friend and companion Minnie Boelt, to whom he was deeply devoted.
He is survived by first cousins Sallie Adams McBride, of Chicago, Illinois, and Carol Adams Foster of South Boston, Virginia; cousin and fellow history buff John McBride; and members of the aforementioned “cousins group” to include Carol Foster, Betsy Blair, Sallie Blair, Kay Franz, Margerie DuBois, Sallie Adams, Betty Hope Adams, Ann Carter Carrington, Sallie Webb, and Donna Strange. He is also survived by his “adopted family” and neighbors Paige Jones and Kevin Holmes, their 5 children and 5 grandchildren of Henrico, Virginia. They met 23 years ago when they moved next door and immediately welcomed Lindsay into their family. They have been “family” and caregivers and will miss him daily, as well as at holidays and special family gatherings.
A viewing will be held at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, Virginia, on November 27, from 12 p.m to 1 p.m. A brief service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia,10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia Court House, Virginia.
