Thurston, Mae Cook, R.N., 101, died on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Lakewood Manor in Richmond, VA. She was born on November 14, 1917 in Crewe, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, William M. Cook and Madeline B. Cook; her husband of 52 years, Eugene R. Thurston, Sr.; and her two brothers, William K. Cook of Roanoke, and Dr. John R. Cook of Richmond. She is survived by her daughter, Carole T. Fanney of Raleigh, NC and a son, Eugene R. Thurston, Jr. (Jean) of Goode, VA. After graduating from Crewe High School, Mae entered St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing in Richmond, receiving an R.N. in 1939. She completed graduate studies in nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Mae retired from C & P Telephone Company as an occupational nurse after 31 years of service. She was a charter member of the Occupational Health Nurses’ Association. She will be missed by all, especially by her 4 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at the Crewe Cemetery, 634 The Falls Rd., Crewe, VA 23930 on Wednesday, April 3 at 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life reception from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Simms Center at Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Dr., Richmond, VA 23238.
