Michael Portewig Gleason

Mike Gleason, 78, of Henrico County, Virginia, passed away on May 18, 2023, after an extended illness with his loving wife, Beverly, by his side. That afternoon the clouds lifted, and the sun ushered him into Heaven. Mike and Beverly married in 2015. They shared a love of antiquing, exploring Colonial Williamsburg, family gatherings, and cooking, especially gumbo and New Orleans style cuisine. Mike’s favorite time of year was Christmas and he enjoyed decorating Ridge Baptist Church during the holidays and on many other occasions for all to enjoy. He also had a passion for metal works, woodworking, and writing poetry. Mike’s favorite poem was An Indian Prayer by Chief Yellow Lark of the Lakota Tribe. Mike was born on April 20, 1945, in Henrico County, the only son of Herbert and Katherine Gleason. After graduating from Douglas Freeman High School in 1963, he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1967. Mike retired in 2011 after 37 years in public service including stints as a parole officer for the Commonwealth of Virginia, revenue officer, and Chief of Tax Enforcement for the City of Richmond. He was a Cradle List member of Ridge Baptist Church and a Past President of the Virginia Weights and Measures Association. Mike was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by wife Beverly and beloved children Ryland (Lisa), Antoni, Tonya (Tony), and grandchildren, Elaina, Mickey and Courtney. Services will be held at Ridge Baptist Church in Henrico, VA on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ridge Baptist Church.
