You were my best friend growing up.
Even though I was a year older, I still found myself looking up to you. You were loyal to your friends, quick to laugh, and made everyone around you feel like they mattered.

Your dad was my dad when I didn't have one. It felt like family when we were together. Why he let either of us behind the wheel of his Audi, I'll never know.

The West End was our playground between the hours of 12 and 4am. Family sized packages of toilet paper from Winn Dixie for the neighbor's trees and tubes of raw cookie dough for us. Baseball every moment in between.

I will miss you, brother.

Matt was my brother Neil’s first born. Neil was so proud to be his Dad. Matt was passionate about his family. He loved us and would tell us often. This is difficult to write because his life was cut so short. He is with his dad, his uncles aunts and grandparents that were gone before him. He is playing with his beloved dog “Bighead” and feeling the love we have for him. My heart breaks for his son, mom and brothers. Our world is never going to be the same.

With love,
Auntie Sharon

It was tragic to hear the news of Matt passing away. We were really good friends for most of our lives. I counted 21 fun filled years and think about Matt everyday. For many of those years we talked or texted everyday. We never lost touch during those years and that’s back when people switched cell phone carriers all the time and before Facebook. Matt and I watched Rusty Wallace get his final win at martinsville. We were both overwhelmed as we knew we were watching history unfold. I bet we tailgated at a dozen races and always had a blast. He was the brother I never had and was always there when you needed something. When he was invited to grill out, to a tailgate, a race, the beach or a party, he was always there! I wish Matt had more years in his life but he certainly had a lot of life in his years! He is greatly missed. RIP Matt! We will grill out and have some cold ones again my friend!

Matt was a long time friend. We grew up playing baseball at TLL. High school we reconnected and became very good buddies. He was like a brother I never had. We had alot of mutual friends and we began living life. There were days we had nothing but scraped up change to go to the beach and or just to buy a simple 12 pack to have fun. We had each others back in so many unwritten ways. Matt was one of the closest buddies I've had. For the past few years we grew apart due to life but we always joked about UVA and VT rivalry. He was my number 1 nemesis, lol. We were about to just meet up with a group of our past friends and work schedules conflicted. I regret that in so many ways. I'm sorry Matt. I'll always drink a Miller Lite for you buddy. Three Amigos Wif, Matt and myself. Great times will happen again. Miss you buddy

To my big brother, Matt Waters, you will be dearly missed. Other than our father, you have been the one who has most influenced the man I have become. You had my back and you propped me up. I am proud to know you and heartbroken it will be so long before I see you again. You will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. Rest in peace Matt.

The Grimes family was crushed when we received the news about the tragic death of Matt Waters. Darren played baseball with Matt and Kevin played with John, Andrew being in between. Neil and I stood at the Tuckahoe fences many a day and night rooting for these kids. Oh the precious memories of the Waters family! None of our family will be in attendance this Thursday as Darren lives in Thailand, Kevin is in Morroco and we are in Virginia Beach for the week. Regardless of our absence our hearts will be there in Spirit with all of Matt's friends and family. Rest in Peace Matt. Now go with God into eternal Glory.
