Pamela Beatrice Walker, 78, of Henrico, Virginia, went to be with her Lord on Friday August 19, 2016. She was born on January 25, 1938 in Savanna la mar, Jamaica. Her parents, Luther Reid and Gertrude Bowden, her brothers, George and Dennis Reid and sister Dorothy White predeceased her. She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Bryan Maxwell Walker, her daughter Karen Jefferson (Rodney), son Ian Walker (Nicole) and seven grandchildren: Brittany, Justin, Gabby, Alexander, Brian, Annabelle, and Baylee, sisters: Marjorie Kenton, and Kewpie Crooks, her brother, Lloyd Reid and a host of beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
She was a true Proverbs 31 Woman. Her love for the Lord, her family and friends was weaved into the tapestry of her life’s story. She was the matriarch of the family. She lived a life of service, and displayed her love through her actions.
Pamela completed her nursing degree at The University of the West Indies in Jamaica. She married her devoted husband Bryan Walker on January 23, 1965. Their marriage was an example of mutual love and adoration. She watched over her household and maintained it well. She worked as a registered nurse for over 30 years. Most of her career was spent in the Brookdale Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in New York City, where she poured her love into the tiniest of patients and comforted families who were fearful of the unknown. There she met her best friend, Dr. Daphney Maylor, who remained her friend and confidante, especially throughout those eventful years of parenting teens.
She attended Bethlehem Assemblies of God in New York, until she retired, and later relocated with her husband to Richmond in 2001. Here she made her church home at West End Assembly of God and served in the Mothers of Preschoolers ministry, assisting in sewing the beautiful costumes for Glorious Christmas Night, and hand knitting exquisite baby blankets and gowns for many friends and family. She even knitted a baby blanket and gown for the New Year’s baby at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Pamela poured her heart into all family gatherings where everyone felt the love and warmth. Her laughter was infectious when chatting with her sisters, or while sharing stories with friends and family. She made her home a starting point for many loved ones before they were able to find a place of their own. She was an avid gardener especially with her brilliant roses, and she was always happy to walk around the yard and share some of her cherished flowers. She was renowned for her elaborate birthday and wedding cakes, Easter buns, and decadent fruitcakes. She gave of her time, and talents and often had a scripture verse or words of wisdom to impart to those near or far.
Pamela leaves a legacy of compassion, and love for God, family, and friends. She led quietly by example, had a special joy that came from serving and leaves a light that will forever shine brightly. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31: vs. 30
