Raymond Thomas Hoge Jr.

HOGE, Mr. Raymond Thomas Hoge, Jr., born April 24, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026. Ray was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, coach, church leader, and friend whose greatest joy came from creating opportunities for those he loved. Through determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community, he built a life that reflected the values he held most dear.

Ray grew up in Richmond and took great pride in the life he built through perseverance and dedication. He enjoyed a distinguished career in sales, spending nearly three decades with Unisource, where he earned numerous awards and the respect of colleagues for his work ethic, loyalty, and ability to connect with people. Ray never met a stranger. He loved conversation, had a wonderfully wild sense of humor, and possessed a natural ability to make people feel welcome.

Ray married his beloved wife Ruth Ann on December 2, 1972, and together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. Their marriage spanned more than fifty years and was marked by a shared commitment to raising their children, serving their church, and opening their home to family and friends. Becoming a husband and father gave Ray a profound sense of purpose. Having grown up with few advantages, he was determined to provide opportunities for his family that he himself had never experienced.

Ray was an active member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, where he faithfully served as an Elder, Usher, and Sunday School teacher, and was a member and leader of numerous committees. He believed deeply in serving others and was always willing to lend a hand wherever help was needed. Whether through the church, his community, or simply helping a neighbor, Ray found fulfillment in giving his time and talents to others without seeking recognition.

Long after his coaching days had ended, he was still affectionately known to many simply as "Coach Ray," a title he wore with great pride. He spent many years after retirement volunteering in the cafeteria at Jackson Davis Elementary as “Mr. Ray”, opening countless juice boxes and ketchup packets with a joy that was unmatched. He found great delight in giving to others and was a believer in the power of a Starbucks gift card and some unexpected treats to brighten someone’s day.

While Ray found great fulfillment in his professional accomplishments and community service, nothing compared to the joy he found in his family. He cherished time spent with Ruth Ann, his children, grandchildren, and extended family. He celebrated their accomplishments as though they were his own and took immense pride in watching each generation grow and flourish.

Ray was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Ann Hoge and his aunt, Doris O’Neal who was instrumental in raising him. He is survived by his children, Kim Hoge Reilly, Tracy Rice (Richard), Stephanie Fournel (Daniel), Jennifer Albertson, Matthew Hoge (Vickie), and Colin Hogg, who joined the family in 2011and whom Ray loved as one of his own. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Emma Reilly, Morgan Rice Asbill (Creighton), Madison Rice (Kameron), Nathaniel Fournel, Braden Fournel, Logan Albertson, Tanner Albertson, Peyton Hoge, and Jordan Hoge; his great-grandchildren, Rowen and Corbin Asbill and many extended family members and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, located at 7000 Park Avenue, Richmond, Virginia, on Tuesday August 4 at 5 pm. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Ray by investing in someone else's future. Coach a child, encourage a student, mentor a young colleague, or simply help someone reach a goal they could not achieve alone. Ray devoted his life to creating opportunities for his family and quietly helping others do the same. There would be no greater tribute to his memory than continuing that legacy.
