I first met Slick at The Sheltering Arms Hospital back in 2010. We would sit together for both breakfast and lunch every day during our rehab assignment. Although he knew that the fine staff were really dedicated and caring, Slick seemed to amuse himself by growling--not at them but usually at the food or "that no-good garbage" he so lovingly labelled it. Barbara was there almost every day and when she couldn't be there it was because of her other family obligations. It was then where I expanded my role and kept him in line. Yeah, he was ornery but in a funny yet harmless way. As a reward for my deeds, Barbara would smuggle in packets of Equal and Diet drinks for me. We had quite a sneaky little operation.
I will miss Richard. He was a good man who truly loved this country and the pride that comes from hard work, raising an honest family, and waving the flag of freedom.
