Beloved father, friend, uncle, coworker, and brother, Richard Joseph Kannan died unexpectedly on December 5, 2025. He is survived by four children: Mary Anisa Kannan (Jordan), Sarah Grace Hunderup (Trevor), Matthew Reinhardt Hunderup, and Jenna Elizabeth Kannan; two grandchildren: Genevieve Lynne Kannan and Maylon Walker Kannan; his beloved, Melissa Marie McCurdy, and her son, Devin; and two siblings: David Kahlil Kannan (Julie) and Teresa Kannan McRoberts. He also leaves behind the following nieces and nephews: Jaime Leigh Kannan Lam (Patrick), Katie Kannan Phillips (Jeff), Julianne Kannan Russell (Kat), Samuel Elias McRoberts, Mickael Aidan McRoberts, and Amelia Grace McRoberts. He was preceded in death by his parents: Mickael Moses Kannan and Jacquelyn Pyles Kannan; his grandparents: Paul Edmund and Mary Ella Ray Pyles, Kahlil and Anisa Fadoil Kannan; as well as Melissa’s son Dylan. His soul dog, Lilly, spent 14 years by his side before passing two days after him.
As a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and member of Delta Sigma Pi, he began his career in finance at Genworth, from which he retired after 26 years. He then served as a chief financial officer for multiple organizations who relied on his business acumen and strategic mind, most recently Torc Robotics. Richard leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and youthful exuberance for life. Known as Papa or Papa Richard, he took delight in gathering his friends and family around him for all events, including obscure holidays. During this Christmas season, his children fondly remember him hosting gingerbread house construction parties. He was also an avid sailor: delighting in sunset sails and trips from Baltimore to the Bahamas.
A memorial service celebrating Richard’s life will be held Saturday, December 13 at 2pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Ave, Richmond, Virginia 23229.
