Ruby Merriman Walters

WALTERS, Ruby Merriman, died on Monday, August 22, 2016. Ruby was born and raised in South Hill, Va. and moved to Richmond to attend Smithdeal Massey Business College. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Hoyle S. “Chick” Walters of The Hermitage at Cedarfield, Richmond, Va.; her daughters, Wendra Leigh Mihaly (Ed) of Dorothy, N.J., and Joanne Whitney Walters (Ed) of Wicomico Church, Va.; her granddaughters, Lindsey Mihaly Nagtzaam (Josh) of Alexandria, Va., and Lauren Mihaly Borcherding (Robbie) of Wayzata, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Reid and Graham Nagtzaam, and Cecilia Borcherding. Ruby fought with grace a lifetime battle of rheumatoid arthritis and all of its complications, but she tried mightily to live a busy and productive life. She was a longtime member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and was very active in the Women of Epiphany Church (WELCA). She was an avid reader and a “green thumb” gardener, and for many years, competed in various Garden Club shows. She and Chick traveled extensively around the world seeing countries and the beauty of the world that as a child she never imagined seeing. She loved to entertain and cherished her friends. She was passionate about music and in earlier years, sang at many of her friend’s weddings. She was a great chef, a volunteer for many causes, and a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Chapel at Epiphany Lutheran Church. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 26, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1400 Horsepen Rd., Richmond, Va. 23226. Interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Cemetery following the service. Everyone is invited to a reception at the church following the service.
