Stephen Clarke Sadtler passed away on Thursday, March 27th 2025 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He was surrounded by his family and passed peacefully from natural causes. Steve was born on November 15th, 1939. He was 85 years old.
Steve graduated from Chestnut Hill Academy in Chestnut Hill, Pa. where he played football and lacrosse. Steve went on to Dickinson College and later graduated from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. While in college Steve joined the National Guard and was assigned to The First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary. “The Troop”, as it was called, often made its way into conversations of Steve’s because of the love he had for it and the many lifelong friends he made from it. While juggling a job, school, and military training, Steve found time to marry the love of his life, Jean Anderson Johnson. They were married for 64 years and had 3 boys, Steve Jr., Tom, and Ben. After college Steve had a successful stock brokerage career and retired from Merrill Lynch as a partner.
In 1980, Steve moved his family from Wayne, Pennsylvania to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where on the weekends he very much enjoyed boating, fishing, sailing, and golf.
Having his family members visit the Shore was what “Poppy” enjoyed the most. If he and Jeanie were lucky enough to have all children and grandchildren on the Shore at the same time, they would have the “Sadtler Olympics”, a competitive family fun event that lasted the weekend and ended with an Olympic style awards ceremony and some bumps, cuts, stings, and great stories.
Steve and Jeanie spent their summers on the shore, winters in Puerto Rico, and the rest of the year in their beloved Philadelphia.
Steve worked hard his whole life both as a stockbroker and a devoted family man and decided it was time to retire. At 60 he retired, however, he remained in the Stock Market for the rest of his life.
Steve’s remaining years were spent on the Shore or in Richmond, Virginia. On the Shore Steve golfed, worked in the yard, and spent time with family and friends. In Richmond he was busy with his son Ben and his wife Stephanie, setting up a very comfortable Penthouse living arrangement for he and Jeanie. This was part of his plan, and it allowed Poppy to pass peacefully knowing his beautiful bride is well taken care of and happy.
Steve was generous with charities he believed in, a smart businessman, a loving and devoted husband and father, and a friend to many. He will be enormously missed.
Steve leaves behind his wife Jean, sons Steve Jr. (pre-deceased) and wife Tracy, Tom, Ben and wife Stephanie, and grandchildren Benjamin, Colby, Riley, Sam, Levi, Parker, and Payton.
