To the Chewning Family,

I am sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Chewning.  He and Mrs. Chewning are together again!!!  They were such an inspiring couple. As her secretary,  I loved hearing her stories regarding how they met and the years of romance that followed.  The one story I loved the most was "Mr. Chewning shining the car lights in the garden so that she could tend her garden late in the evening."  Theirs was a beautiful love story.  I know you will miss him but, knowing that she is there waiting for him is comforting.

Dear Friends:

Back in 1988 I succeeded David North as the President of Molins Machine Co Inc and very shortly thereafter, met your Father for the first time. He had been retired for about four years but wanted to come over to Carolina Avenue to welcome me, not just to Molins, but to America!

At that first meeting I discovered a quiet, engaging person who displayed a considerable curiosity and offered to help the Cooke family in any possible way. Suffice to say that he did! We often met with Ellen and Tom at dinner engagements, parties and simply around town. Tom was someone you could not fail to like. His kindness and generosity  of spirit was evidenced by the number of good charitable and community works that he undertook for a large part of his life. I know you will miss him as will those who came into daily contact with him at Cedarfield. Such as our great mutual friend Maggie North and Audrey Moncure who until a recent retirement was the volunteer coordinator. My own wife Barbara worked (actually volunteered) for a number of years in the Special Care Unit for Alzheimers sufferers, and she would often bump into Tom in the corridor and enjoy a chat. He remained interested in others and would always ask after  me and our family.

I will miss Tom and you will miss him terribly but no doubt will cherish some very happy family memories.

If I could summarize in a few words my lasting impression of your Father those words would include: “one of the very nicest people that I can ever remember meeting in America, a fine Gentleman and a great human being who knew how to love”.

I'm sorry we missed the service at Cedarfield. We live down in South Carolina where we are now retired, but stay in touch with old friends in Richmond.

Barbara joins with me in offering you are sincere condolences and sympathy at this tough time.
