He was born January 21, 1921, in New York City, New York, to Mildred Lyon Hillelson and Irving Hillelson. Upton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School of Business with high honors at the age of 20. Simultaneously, he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Textiles. Upton then proudly enlisted to serve his country for four years as gunnery officer aboard the USS Massachusetts. Upon discharge, he attended NYU School of Law and then Rhode Island School of Design. Upton was the founder, CEO and president of the New England textile conglomerate Granite Mills and owned or managed 25% of the country's woolen textiles in his prime. Upton was a respected financial consultant for the Providence Journal and was frequently quoted in Women's Wear Daily, which is now "W" Magazine. It was his creative design that first juxtaposed the colors brown and gray. He was a favored manufacturer for such giants as Bobby Brooks and Pauline Trigere as well as the U.S. military. He was shortlisted for CEO of Textron, Inc. in the 1960's.
Upton is remembered for his philanthropy to underprivileged children with his widespread donation of land and beach properties for sports activities.
Without question Upton's greatest accomplishment was his devotion to and love of his beautiful wife, Shoshana. His hip fracture at Meadow Glen of Richmond took him away too soon. He leaves behind three children: Howard Hillelson of Atlanta, Dr. June Hillelson of Grand Rapids, Dr. Ruth Hillelson of Richmond and his beloved son-in-law Dr. Terry Whipple.
To be remembered as precious family who brightened Upton's days, are Susan Cole of Amelia, Virginia, Colonel Larry K. Whipple, USAF retired, his wife Deb Whipple and their sparkling daughter Austen of Rockledge, Florida.
Upton left a legacy of strength, principles and determination. Nothing is the same without him.
Burial services private.
