He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Teresa; his children, Lee (Tiffany) and Corie (Dan); his grandchildren, Lilly, Wesley, Caroline, and Harper; and his nephew, Andy (Shelly). He also leaves behind his faithful feline companion, Fifi. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Aletha and Byron, and his sister, Jerry.
A native of Huron, South Dakota, Bill found his way to Virginia by way of the Army, where he met Teresa and planted his roots. Family legend has it that Bill, in his uniform blues, was charmed by Teresa’s fierce go-go dance moves.
A man of limited words—many of them unprintable—Bill carried a quiet wit and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. He preferred the company of cats and cars, perfected the fine art of piddling, and often favored the journey over the destination (“It’s time to go!”). Above all, he treasured his family, friends, and neighbors, whether he was bragging about his grandchildren, dining with his in-laws, visiting with longtime buddies, or enjoying a beer on the deck.
Though he is now at peace, Bill’s last days were profoundly shaped by an unrelenting disease and the shortcomings of a system meant to support those facing it. To honor his memory, we hope for a future in which elders living with Alzheimer’s disease, along with their families and caregivers, receive the dignity, respect, and support they deserve. The family expresses its gratitude for the shining lights who helped navigate a challenging path.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or to the Richmond Animal League (www.ral.org).
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
