
William Craig Wheeler died May 17, 2025 after a long illness. Craig was born on January 17, 1950 in Washington DC to the late William McDonald Wheeler and Aubee Louise Wheeler. Most of his childhood was spent in Alma, GA. He graduated with honors from Bacon County High School. Craig received a degree from Georgia Southern in Criminal Justice and later worked on his master’s degree.
Craig served as a Capital Police Officer in Washington, DC and was assigned to the House of Representatives. Most of his years were spent as a paralegal for a number of law firms in Statesboro, GA and Richmond, VA. In his later years, he worked at Kroger.
Craig married Mary Metzinger January 13, 1973. They lived in the Statesboro, GA area with their daughter Caroline and later moved to Richmond, VA. He was a member of the Optimist Club serving as the newsletter editor. He enjoyed membership in the Statesboro Astronomy Club. He also served as a reading tutor in the Adult Literacy Program.
Craig loved flowers, birdwatching, walking on the beach, and building different projects around the house. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a loyal friend to many and a wonderful brother, husband, father, and grandfather to his family.
Craig is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Metzinger Wheeler, daughter Caroline Wheeler, grandchildren Anden, Julian, Jacob, and Carolaine, his brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church at 11AM. Interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 1PM.
