Obituary of Winston Hill Waring
WARING, Winston Hill, 92, passed away September 20, 2010, after a brief illness. He was born August 12, 1918 in King William County, Va. to the late Martha and Thomas B. Waring. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy; two sisters, Virginia Minges and Marguerite Jackson; and his grandson, John Winston Barrett. He is survived by his three daughters, Carol Barrett and husband, John, of Rocky Mount, N.C., Martha Carneale and husband, Doug, of Mechanicsville, Va., and Rita Ollice and husband, Dan, of West Chester, Penn.; eight grandchildren, Emily Bezner and husband, Jim, of Simpsonville, S.C., Michael Barrett of Belmont, N.C., Kelley Kirby and husband, Zack, of Apex, N.C., Trey Almeida and wife, Courtney, of Mechanicsville, Va., Berkley Almeida and wife, Heidi, of Fairfax, Va., Tommy Ollice and Katie Ollice of West Chester, Penn. and Lindsay Ollice of Arlington, Va.; nine great-grandchildren, Joseph, Caroline and Katherine Grace Bezner, Tyler and Preston Almeida, and Hayden, Coleman, Jacob and Mary Kirby. Winston served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Black Waring on August 1, 1942, and they were married 68 years until her death six weeks ago on August 8. At the end of the war, Winston returned to Richmond and began a career as a sales representative for Richmond Office Supply, where he was a highly regarded employee for more than 50 years. Winston was an avid hunter and spent many happy days with his cousins and other friends hunting deer and ducks on land surrounding the Waring ancestral home, Liberty Hall, in King William County. He also enjoyed woodworking of all types and his many creations of furniture, birdhouses and other wooden objects will be cherished by all. Winston was a devoted member of the Joppa Masonic Lodge and the ACCA Temple Shrine, and was a past commander of the Legion of Honor. He was a faithful member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church for more than 60 years and rarely missed a Sunday service. Winston will be remembered for his steadfast love for his family and many friends. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed him. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 23, 2010 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1101 Forest Ave., Richmond, Va. 23229.
