Albert Henry Dickens, Jr. died peacefully at the Martha Jo Leslie State Veterans Home in Kosciusko, MS on Thursday, May 23, 2019. He was born on June 28, 1925 in Carthage, MS to Albert Henry and C Bell Langdon Dickens. Albert was the 6th of 6 children.
He joined the US Navy, serving in the South Pacific from 1943-1945. Albert became a lifelong fan of Big Band music during the war, and throughout his life could be found in the living room listening to his favorites. Upon returning to the states, Albert married his childhood sweetheart, Emily Caroline Johnson. He attended the University of Mississippi and obtained his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University Of Mississippi School Of Law. Albert maintained his love of Ole Miss and Ole Miss Football. He held season tickets and attended games for decades.
After obtaining his law degree he worked for USF&G and Allstate Insurance Company. Then, Albert opened and operated his own law practice in Jackson, MS for close to 40 years. He was an expert in Workman’s Compensation law.
Albert, a faithful Christian, was a long-term member and greeter at Christ United Methodist Church. A member of the North Exchange Club, he worked tirelessly to uphold the Exchange Club motto “Unity for Service.” He served as President and received the Exchangeitte of the Year Award for his outstanding contributions. Albert could be seen selling Christmas trees and parking cars for events. He was willing to help in any way that he could, often providing pro bono legal advice to friends and family.
Always up for a challenge, he took flying lessons from his son who was a flight instructor and commercial pilot. Albert obtained his private pilot’s license in his 50's.
Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Dickens, his parents, Albert and C Bell Dickens, as well as his siblings, Charlie Bell Dickens, Lula Kate Upton, Olive McMillen, Frances Dickens and Morrison Dickens.
He is survived by his son, Gary Gene Dickens and wife Nancy Yowell Dickens of Huntersville, NC. Al was the proud grandfather of Gary Ruston Dickens (Alya) of Cornelius, NC. and Elizabeth Ann Atkins (Billy) of Jacksonville, FL. He was also proud to claim 4 great grandchildren, Jackson, Kaya, Charlie and Miles. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Nell Johnson McNulty of Draper, UT and nephews, Louis Clifford Atkins of Senoia, GA, William Harry Atkins of Montgomery, AL, Robert L. Johnson, Jr. and Billy Mike Johnson of Carthage, MS, and Glen and LaRue Johnson. Nieces, Mary Lauren McNulty of Pasadena, CA, Dr. Lisa Bates Stone of Ridgeland, MS and Martha and Carolyn Johnson.
Visitation for Albert Dickens will be held on June 22nd at Christ United Methodist Church from 9:00-10:00am with a celebration of his life at 10:00 am in the sanctuary. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton, MS
