OBITUARY

Barbara Nell Savage Hume

October 17, 1931December 28, 2020

Barbara Nell Savage Hume, 89, peacefully passed away on December 28, 2020. She was born on October 17, 1931 in Hampshire, Tennessee. She grew up on her family’s farm with two older brothers and a younger brother. She had many chores on the farm but loved spending her summers playing and swimming in Dry Fork creek and Cathy Creek. In her youth, she attended Cathy Creek Church of Christ, one of the oldest Churches of Christ in the United States. After graduating high school, she attended David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. She worked in Columbia, Tennessee for the State where she learned every County and the number that corresponded with that County.

She married Arthur Scott Hume, Sr. in Oxford, Mississippi in 1955. They raised their three children in Jackson, Mississippi. Barbara enjoyed picking fruit from their orchard, canning and making delicious jams and jellies. She managed her family, raised her children and dealt with life with compassion, grace and peace. She was an unwavering faithful Christian and never had an unkind word for anyone. She could be heard saying “if he is happy enough to sing, then let him sing”. Her time on earth was truly an example for all of us and she will be greatly missed.

She is preceded in death by her three brothers and her husband, Arthur Scott Hume, Sr. She is survived by her sons Arthur Scott Hume, Jr. and Andrew Tucker Hume and her daughter, Ann Marie Hume Shivers. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: St Jude Research Hospital Memphis, Tennessee.

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Heaven welcomed a great lady in Ms Barbara Hume. I had the privilege of knowing both Mr and Mrs Hume. Attending church while Mr Arthur served and Ms Barbara was always quietly serving in any capacity! A great mentor and admirer of how a Christian, person,or lady should carry theirselves. Was very soft spoken and always had a smile! I fell in love with these two people before I knew their names! I greatly miss both and know their shoes will/are hard to be filled! I love you Ms Barbara!

Barbara and Arthur were among the first people I met when moving to Jackson in 1959. They were so welcoming to me and my family. Later when I needed help, they were there. Memories of both of them are always with me.

They were such a beautiful Christian couple. They lived the life always full of love and care for other people. Their legacy will never die.

This sweet LADY did indeed possess the "LIGHT OF LIFE"! Wherever we read the ways we are told to live our life in such a way that God's love to us is expressed to others, she accomplished each one! May God bless and comfort her family as they cherish "precious memories" of their Mother and Grandmother.
