Barbara was born on December 6, 1937, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to Esther Hay Swanson and Everett Leo Madison. She grew up in Benton Harbor and graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1955. She attended Lake Michigan College and later graduated from Hinds Community College, where she earned an Associate Degree.
On January 31, 1957, Barbara married Frank Alphonso Quiriconi, beginning a marriage that would span 69 years. Together, Barbara and Frank built a remarkable life centered around their family, friends, travel, and the experiences they shared over nearly seven decades. Frank preceded Barbara in death on February 9, 2026, just seven months before her passing.
Barbara and Frank raised five children: Margo Quiriconi and her partner, Walter Taylor; Shannon Alvis and her husband, Jim; Stephanie Scott and her husband, Chris; Stephan Quiriconi and his wife, Beth Merchent; and Robert Quiriconi, who preceded his parents in death.
Family was at the heart of Barbara’s life, and one of her greatest joys was being a grandmother. She is survived by her grandchildren, Jessica Ahuja and her husband, Mohit; Zachariah Quiriconi and his wife Lindsay; Vincent Ciaramitaro and his wife, Claire Harris; Christina McRae and her husband, Alexander; Rebekah Quiriconi; Charlie Scott; Melissa Warren and her husband, Matt; Isabelle Ciaramitaro and her husband, Alex Ortiz; Elizabeth Scott; and Karamia Quiriconi.
Barbara’s grandchildren remember her with tremendous affection and gratitude. Each carries positive memories of time spent with their grandmother and of the lasting influence she had on their lives. The relationships she formed with them were a source of great happiness to Barbara, and the love, encouragement, experiences, and memories she gave them will remain an important part of her legacy.
Her family grew again with the arrival of her great-grandchildren: Sam, Madison, and Kennedy Ahuja; Harper, Aubrey, Reese, and Charlotte McRae; Drew and William Quiriconi; Luca Ortiz; and Everett Warren.
Barbara had a lifelong enthusiasm for tennis and spent many happy hours on the court. She was an avid player at River Hills Club and Colonial Country Club in Jackson, Mississippi, and at the Longboat Key Club in Longboat Key, Florida. Tennis provided Barbara not only competition and exercise, but also many friendships and wonderful memories throughout the years.
Barbara and Frank also shared a love of travel. Together, they enjoyed over 30 cruises, often sharing those adventures with children and grandchildren. Those journeys became part of the rich collection of memories from their long marriage.
Although dementia presented Barbara and her family with difficult challenges during the final years of her life, those years do not define her. Barbara’s life is better measured by the nearly nine decades that preceded her passing: a 69-year marriage, five children, ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, countless tennis matches, creative endeavors, journeys around the world, enduring friendships, and a family whose lives were profoundly shaped by her presence.
The family would like to thank St. Catherine’s Village for its excellent care of Barbara during her time there. The family also thanks Nikki Lewis and her BNice team of devoted sitters (with special thanks to long-time caretakers Carolyn Hull, Elaine McCray, Carol Lewis, Ernestine McGrew, and Aretha Smith).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The MIND Center, 2500 N. State Street, Jackson, MS 39216 or via the web: https://www.umc.edu/Development/How/Funds/MIND-Center.html
A graveside service to honor Barbara’s life will be held in Coloma, Michigan at a later date.
