

Charles Nolan Fortenberry, Jr., age 74, died at his home in Jackson on November 15, 2014, of sudden cardiac arrest. A man of many interests, possessed of encyclopedic knowledge, he loved meeting new friends and keeping in touch with family and old friends. He was an enthusiastic and eclectic baker, collector, correspondent, church-goer, football fan, gift-giver, golfer, music lover, news-follower, raconteur, reader, traveler, and volunteer. Born December 14, 1939, in Bryan, Texas, to the late Charles Nolan and the late Mae Edwards Fortenberry of Auburn, AL, Charles attended the former Oxford Elementary School on Jackson Avenue in Oxford, MS. Although he lived for brief periods in Texas and at the Devereux School in Devon, PA, he spent most of his life in Mississippi. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his younger brother Joseph Edwin Fortenberry, then of Washington, DC. He is survived by his sister-in-law Ashley Doherty of Washington, DC; niece Dorothy A. Fortenberry, “nephew-in-law” Colin M. Wambsgans, and great-niece Dorothy Ashley (“Lee”) Wambsgans, all of Los Angeles, CA; trustees Karen C. and Robert S. Montjoy of Auburn, AL; and several cousins. His funeral will be held at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson on Friday, December 5, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and a service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Galloway United Methodist Church of Jackson; the Smith Robertson Senior Center of Jackson; or the Friends of Mississippi State Hospital, Inc., of Whitfield, MS.
