David Joseph Browman, Jr.—widely regarded as the funniest hairdresser to ever live—passed away at home in Jackson, Mississippi, on December 20, 2025, at the age of 57, surrounded by family and, presumably, excellent hair.
Born on September 3, 1968, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to Brenda Harpe and David Joseph Browman, Sr., David knew early in life that he was destined for great things—chief among them, telling the truth, telling it loudly, and making people look fabulous while doing so. After attending Brandon High School, he earned his degree in Cosmetology, a decision that would change the hair (and lives) of Jackson forever.
David married the love of his life, Alphonso Campbell, in 2023. Together they built a home filled with laughter, loyalty, and very strong opinions. They were also proud parents to three four-legged children—Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette—who were impeccably loved, deeply spoiled, and had their hair done on a regular schedule, whether they needed it or not. (But you could count on their hair appointments bringing on a day of rain.)
A beloved and legendary hairstylist in the Jackson area, David was known not only for his masterful styling but for the real reason people kept coming back: the conversation. His chair was a confessional, a comedy club, and a safe harbor all in one. He had a rare gift for connecting deeply, telling the truth with humor, and making everyone feel seen—sometimes after saying exactly what they didn’t want to hear, but always what they needed.
David’s wit was sharp, his heart was enormous, and his friendships were lifelong. When not transforming hair or spirits, he loved dining out, eating, going to the movies, traveling to New Orleans, and spending time with the friends and family he adored. He was fiercely loyal, endlessly funny, and deeply human—a true original.
David fought his three-year battle with cancer like a gladiator—filled with dignity, bravely, and with the quiet resolve of the Russell Crowe variety of gladiator. Even in the midst of it all, his generosity was unstoppable. When he should have been resting, he was still calling, texting, checking in, giving advice no one asked for but everyone needed, and reminding people—gently but firmly—that life, like good hair, is better when you show up for it. He gave his time, his energy, his sharp wit, and his enormous heart without keeping score. Even on his hardest days, David somehow found room to make others laugh, feel loved, and feel just a little more put together. Giving was his instinct, his talent, and his legacy—and he did it beautifully until the very end.
David is survived by his husband, Alphonso Campbell; his sister, Ashlee Lucas (Allen Lucas); his parents, Brenda Burghard (Bo Burghard) and David Browman, Sr. (Winnie Browman); father-in-law Richard Campbell, mother-in-law Shelia Campbell; his niece and nephew, Avery and Parks Douglass (Meredith Blanchard Douglass); his three children, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette; and an extraordinary community of friends and clients who loved him dearly.
