Madison
Delton Ledrew Rutland, 85, of Madison, MS died on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Baptist Hospital in Jackson. Del was born in Mt. Olive, MS on November 7, 1927.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Merle Cole Rutland, in 2011.
He is survived by his sons; Ronnie Rutland (Joan), Daryl Rutland (Cindy), Jeff Rutland (Rita) and Doug Rutland. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; Kimberly Witcher, Carmen Wood, Michael Rutland, Lindsay Rutland, Leslie Velazquez, Zachary Rutland, Reagan Rutland, Jared Rutland, Nick Rutland, Will Rutland, Dwight Bain, Russell Bain, and five great-grandchildren.
He graduated from Salem High School outside of Collins. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1952. He was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean War.
He received his undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1954. He immediately began working for Crawford & Company in Baton Rouge, LA. Over his 34 year career, he managed offices in Louisiana and Mississippi. While in Jackson, he served as President of the MS Claims Association.
Del was involved in youth baseball of Jackson, where he served as Little League and Servian Club president for several years.
In his retirement years, he was involved in consulting and auditing throughout the U.S. for his former company. He also spent many years traveling the country with his wife and friends in their RV where they vacationed and served in ministry opportunities. Del enjoyed skiing in Colorado with friends and family. He was an official member of the "Brittlebones Ski Club." Del loved his grandchildren and would take them on trips in the RV as well as attending any activity or sport they were involved in.
Del and Merle were a team and invested their lives in knowing Christ and sharing him with many that crossed their paths. Del stayed very active all of his life and spent much of his time supporting and serving various Christian ministries. He made a trip to see his former manager and led him to Christ before he died. He was also a member of Live Oaks Golf Club where he played every week, enjoyed the group of seniors he played with, and scored three holes in one in his later years.
He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church for many years before joining Keypointe Church in Madison, where his son Jeff serves as pastor. He will be missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 19th, from 5:00 - 7:00PM. at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home located at 1161 Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland, MS. There will be a short visitation beginning at 10:00AM on Wednesday, with the Funeral Services beginning at 11:00AM. Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
