Elizabeth Armistead Price Johnson, daughter of the late Robert Black Price, M.D. and Sarah Neal Armistead Price passed away October 3, 2012. She was born June 7, 1932, in Jackson, MS, when her parents, medical missionaries to China, were home on furlough. She went to China at two months of age, returning in August 1941, when the American consulate ordered American women and children home due to imminent war with Japan. Dr. Price was caught in China when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and held until returned as an exchange prisoner on the Swedish repatriation ship, the Gripsholm in September 1942.
Mrs. Johnson attended public schools in Jackson, graduating from Central High School in 1950. She attended Agnes Scott College and graduated from Southwestern at Memphis, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and graduated in 1954.
She married Hugh Richard Johnson, Jr. of Columbia, MS, December 22, 1956. They shared a love for their church, their family, their friends, and many mutual interests. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where she and Dr. Johnson were members of the choir for many years. She was a member of the Junior League of Jackson, Matrons’ Luncheon Club, Elsinore Garden Club, Mississippi Museum of Art, and First Families of Virginia.
Professionally, Mrs. Johnson was an artist and a signature member of National Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain Watermedia Society, and Mississippi Watercolor Society, among others. She was one of the seven founding members, and first secretary, of the Mississippi Watercolor Society.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, H. Richard Johnson, Jr., M.D. of Jackson, sons Hugh Richard Johnson III, of Plano, Texas, and Robert Price Johnson and his wife, Vikki Hughes Johnson, of Oxford, MS. She is also survived by grandchildren Anna Prevost Johnson Hoffard and her husband, John Russell Hoffard of Pearland, TX, William Price Johnson and his fiancée Ashley Lauren Rhodes of Houston, TX, Hunter Lee Johnson and Price Richard Johnson, both of Plano, TX, and her great-grandson Evan Chase Hoffard. Also surviving Mrs. Johnson is her sister Sarah Price Wright of Jackson, MS.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Black Price, an infant brother, Robert Price, Jr. and sisters Beverly Blunt Price, Mary Kate Price Wells, Caroline Price Stockett, and Anne Price Truly.
If desired, memorials may be made to Chamberlain-Hunt Academy or French Camp Academy.
The visitation will be held Thursday Oct. 4,2012 from 5:30-7:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church, Greeting Courtyard, Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held Friday 11:00am at the church. Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery. Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
