Gwynn Green Jacobs, 87, lifetime resident of Jackson and lately of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away quietly at her home in Atlanta Wednesday, September 28. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Harry Jacobs, her oldest son Harry Westbrook Jacobs, and her grandson William Phillip Crockett III. She is survived by four children, Dr. William Carlisle (and Elizabeth) Jacobs of Atlanta, Alice Jacobs (and Al) Roberts of Mendenhall, David Gwynn (and Michelle) Jacobs of Ridgeland, and Nella Jacobs Rigell(and Phil) Colson of Atlanta, her daughter-in law Janet Peters Jacobs of Jackson, and by her sister Jonelle Green Primos of Jackson. Her legacy includes eleven surviving grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Gwynn, daughter of the late Mynelle Westbrook Green Hayward and Joseph Clarence Green, graduated from Central High School, class of 1941, and attended Millsaps college and the University of Texas. Pursuing her interest in art, she also studied for a time under the tutelage of Mississippi artist William Hollingsworth, who recognized and encouraged her exceptional talent.
Although her creative talent remained a guiding force in her life and found expression in countless ways, she considered her family to be her first responsibility, and her greatest gift. She was a devoted wife and mother, and later a beloved mother-in-law and grandmother. Her paintings and sculpture reflected the beauty she found in the world around her. Many capture fleeting moments in the everyday activities of her children and grandchildren.
She and her husband Harry were long time active members of First Baptist Church of Jackson. They co-owned Greenbrook Flowers. For many years, she was also a member of the Junior League of Jackson, Elsinore Garden Club, High Noon and Matron's luncheon clubs. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
The funeral service will be held in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Jackson Saturday October 1 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be 5-7 Friday evening at Wright and Ferguson in Ridgeland, and Saturday morning 9am in the chapel of First Baptist Church. Memorial gifts may be made to: Mynelle Gardens (PO box 12308, Jackson, MS), the First Baptist Church of Jackson, or The American Cancer Society .
