

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, James was a lifelong resident of Terry and a proud American. He served honorably in the United States Navy, exemplifying the values of service and dedication that he carried throughout his life. A hardworking and committed individual, James balanced life as an active soybean farmer with a long and successful career at BellSouth, from which he retired.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jamie Kennedy Gardner; his son, Steven K. Gardner; his brother, M.D. Gardner Jr.; his sisters, Ruth George and Barbara Ann Matteson; and his parents, M.D. Gardner and Annie Lee Gardner.
He is survived by his son, James Clell Gardner Jr.; neighbors who were like family and his caregivers.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Frances Powell of Terry for her devoted care of James in his home over the past two years and also wish to thank the staff of the VA Medical Center in Jackson for their compassion and excellent care.
James will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, quiet strength, and lifelong devotion to family, faith, and country.
A visitation for James will be held Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church-Terry, 209 Raymond St, Terry, MS 39170, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Graveside service will occur immediately following on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Terry Cemetery, Terry, MS 39170.
