

Jane Elizabeth Ross Best, truly an angel on Earth, died early Monday morning, August 29, 2016 at 90 years of age from complications of Alzheimer’s. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Adeline Brown Ross, and father, James Lavelle Ross. Jane was a native Jacksonian and attended public schools in Jackson, Mississippi from Power Elementary to Bailey Junior High and Central High School. She graduated from Central in 1944, where she was a member of DBS (Delta Beta Sigma), a favorite, a beauty and a Company B sponsor with the ROTC.
After she graduated from Central High School, she attended MSCW and then the University of Mississippi where she was a favorite and a member of Chi Omega sorority. At the end of World War II, when Homer returned from the service, Jane decided to forego her education and went to work for the University so that Homer could finish college and get his degree. They were married on September 2, 1947, in Jackson, Mississippi, and were married for 69 years. They were founding members of Northminster Baptist Church in 1967, where Jane taught Sunday School for some 30 years.
Jane and a group of her friends were founders of Le Dejeuner Luncheon Club in 1948, in which she participated for over 50 years. She and her husband, Homer, were both longtime members of “The Lunch Bunch” group for over 50 years as well.
Jane is survived by her husband, Homer Best, Jr., her 4 children: James Homer Best, Camp Best, Julie Best Clark and DeDe Best Miley; 5 grandchildren: Nathan Best (Kimberly), Adam Clark (Maggie), Suzanna Best, Doty Miley and Wilson Miley, and 4 great grandchildren: Campbell Best, Yates Best, Dotson Clark and Savannah Best.
Her family would like to thank her caregiver of over 10 years, Donna Gates, Oxford Healthcare, numerous special caregivers, and Hospice Ministries for their loving service to Jane. They would like to especially thank her dear pastor of Northminster Baptist Church, Charles E. Poole.
Funeral Services will be at Northminster Baptist Church on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM with visitation at the Church beginning at 9:30 AM. Burial will follow at the Mausoleum at Parkway Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northminster Baptist Church, the Alzheimer’s Foundation, or The Mind Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
