She was born on November 30, 1948, to Lizzie Mae and G.C. Chambers and graduated from Forest High School before attending Mississippi College, where she studied Elementary Education. She later married George Stanley Roberts, with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2021.
Janis devoted much of her life to being a homemaker and caring for her family. She was deeply devoted to her husband, Stanley, and their marriage was one of the most important parts of her life. He was her rock, and together they shared a life filled with love, laughter, companionship, and many wonderful memories. She especially enjoyed traveling with him, cooking dinner at home, going on walks, shopping, and simply enjoying each other’s company.
Janis loved decorating for the holidays and had a true gift for making each season feel beautiful, festive, and special. When it came to holiday decorating, she was a true “Martha Stewart,” creating warm and memorable spaces for her family to enjoy.
An avid reader, Janis read hundreds of books throughout her life and was a longtime member of a book club through the Ridgeland Library. She also enjoyed giving back to her community and had an appreciation for Mississippi history, serving as a docent and giving tours at both the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion and the Eudora Welty House.
Janis was a member of St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church and before that a long-time member of Forest United Methodist Church. She was deeply involved in the Methodist church for many years and often attended their annual conference, serving as lay onsite coordinator. She also, alongside Stanley, taught Sunday school for many years. Her faith was something she lived out through her involvement, service, and commitment to her church community.
Janis had a wonderful sense of humor and a playful side that those closest to her knew well. She had a way of making people laugh, whether through a quick comment, a funny observation, or perfectly timed humor. Her warmth, wit, and personality brought joy to those around her and will be remembered fondly.
Janis’s son, Stan, held a very special place in her heart. She was incredibly proud of him and of the life and family he built with his wife, Colleen. Through every stage of his life, she remained a loving and supportive presence, and the bond they shared meant so much to her. She took great joy in watching Stan become a father and in seeing his family grow to include her four beloved granddaughters.
Being a grandmother was one of the greatest joys of Janis’s life. She made it a priority to keep up with each of her granddaughters and was especially devoted to following their sports and activities. She attended as many events in person as she possibly could, and when she couldn’t be there, she followed live updates or watched via livestream. No matter the distance, she always found a way to stay involved. She celebrated their accomplishments, kept up with their seasons, and made sure they always knew how proud she was of them.
Janis will be remembered for her devotion to her family, the love she shared with Stanley, her faith, her sense of humor, her love of reading, her service to her community, her gift for making holidays special, and the many years she spent caring for, supporting, and cheering on the people she loved most.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Stanley Roberts, who passed away on August 23, 2021, and by her parents, Lizzie Mae and G.C. Chambers.
She is survived by her son, Stan Roberts; daughter-in-law, Colleen Roberts; and her four granddaughters, Elena, Emma, Tori, and Meredith.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Parkway Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
