

Joan Spencer, 85, went to be with Jesus on April 1, 2017 at Hospice Ministries. She was loved and cared for by her family and friends, who will miss her loving, caring and compassionate spirit. Joan was born in Jacksonville, Florida on March 30, 1932 to Walter Watson Cogburn and Naomi Ruth Veach Cogburn. Joan was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of New Orleans, where she served in various roles in the WMU and helped teach English as a second language. She also served in various roles in Sunday School where she served alongside her husband. During recent years, Joan has been a member of First Baptist Church of Madison, and the Friends in Faith Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Dick Spencer, and is survived by her daughter Cindy Martin and her husband Paul; her son Richard A. Spencer, Jr. and his wife Brenda; and her sister, Jean Dolan and her husband Don of Jacksonville, Florida. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren: Richard Spencer (Katharine); Ainsley Spencer; Spencer Martin (Kaitlyn); and Kate Martin, as well as 8 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS on April 4, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Madison, on April 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Prior to this service, visitation will be held at the church at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to either the building program of the First Baptist Church of Madison, 2100 Main St., Madison, MS 39110 or the Christian mission organization Latin America to the World, 6824 Lackman Road, Shawnee, KS 66217(www.latinamericatotheworld.org).
