It is with profound sadness and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Kathy McKissack Greenleaf. A dear wife, beloved friend, adored sister-in-law, treasured aunt, devoted educator and guiding light to many. Kathy departed this life for her new eternal life leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her warmth, compassion, and enthusiasm for life will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Kathy was born on August 10, 1955, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Clark Clovis McKissack and Wanda Crow McKissack, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in passing by her sister, Pamela McKissack McClure. Kathy’s roots were grounded in the love and support of her family, shaping the caring spirit she shared throughout her life in her unique way.
Kathy was a graduate of Pascagoula High School in 1973. Kathy went on to attend Mississippi State University where she was an active member of Phi Mu sorority. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and Social Studies, and later earned a Master’s degree at the University of South Alabama. Her dedication and love for teaching profoundly influenced her career and personal pursuits.
Kathy devoted over twenty years to teaching, shaping countless young minds with her knowledge, kindness, and unwavering commitment. She served in Moss Point, Jackson Public, and Madison County Schools, leaving a legacy of excellence and compassion in every classroom she entered. Her students and colleagues alike remember her for her enthusiasm, encouragement, and genuine care.
On August 11, 1989, on the back porch of their Neshoba County Fair Cabin, Kathy married her soulmate, William Fox (Bill) Greenleaf, with whom she shared a loving partnership and a life full of shared joys. A member of Christ United Jackson, Kathy’s faith was integral to her life.
She found great enjoyment in teaching, rooting for the Dawgs, spending time walking with her pups, and expressing herself through music and dance. Her interactions often brought joy and brightness to those nearby, although her distinctive ways of communicating in her later years sometimes made friends feel as if they needed a secret decoder ring just to keep up.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Peach Tree Village Assisted Living, with special appreciation for Sheila Wells and Shirley T. Allen, whose kindness and dedication brought comfort in difficult times. Sincere thanks are also given to the team at St. Joseph Hospice for their gentle care and support.
