

Madeleine Louise Lotterhos Atwell, age 98, passed into eternity on March 10, 2017 at Wisteria Gardens in Pearl, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Anna Russell Lotterhos and Frederick Charles "Fritz" Lotterhos and was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul Louis Atwell, her only sibling, Russell Lotterhos, her son Bert Frederick "Skipper'' Atwell, and her son-in-law, Dr. Robert "Bob" Whitmore, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Monday March 13, 2017 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Mississippi preceded by visitation at 10:00am. The family will also receive friends from 5-7pm Sunday at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland.
Madeleine was born on May 30, 1919 in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. She attended Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina for two years before transferring to the University of Alabama where she graduated with a degree in Business. In 1942, Madeleine moved to Washington, DC where she was assistant to the director of the Department of Commerce. There she met her future husband, Paul.
They were married a year later and relocated to Schenectady, New York with Paul's job at General Electric. After two winters of dealing with snow and ice, Madeleine convinced Paul to move to Mississippi where they remained the rest of their lives.
Madeleine was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and River Hills Club, both located in Jackson. She was also an active member of the Eastover Sewing Club, Dix-a-Deau, Hermitage Club, and Chi Omega Alumnae Association. While raising her family, she also performed countless hours as a volunteer at Whitfield Mental Hospital, the Old Ladies Home, the Lions Club, and her children's school activities. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Madeleine will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Madeleine is survived by her two daughters, Chicki Atwell, Madison, Mississippi, and Paula Atwell Whitmore, Norfolk, Virginia, and by her granddaughter and namesake, Anna Madeleine Atwell, Madison, Mississippi. She is also survived by her best friend and constant companion during the past forty years, Corine White.
The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Wisteria Gardens and at Homecare Hospice, for their compassionate care.
Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, French Camp Academy, or any animal rescue organization as Madeleine dearly loved all of God's creatures, large or small.
