Marilyn Jane Currier passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at home in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Mrs. Currier was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on December 21, 1929, to Melvin H. and Margaret Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Robert D. Currier.
Mrs. Currier grew up during the depression in Grand Rapids Michigan where she graduated from East Grand Rapids High School. She attended and graduated from the University of Michigan, where she met her husband. After they married in 1951, she taught the children who were long-term patients in the University of Michigan hospital. In 1961 the family moved to Jackson, Mississippi for Dr. Currier to take a position at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Marilyn volunteered at UMMC and was an active member of the AAUW. Raising her two daughters, Mom was still a teacher to the end, very recently still able to quote Chaucer, and correcting the English of her children and grandchildren, as well as expressing dismay at the incorrect usage of the language. She was a kind and generous soul whose strong moral compass influenced us all. She was particularly incensed by injustice of any kind. Marilyn loved to play tennis when she was younger, and continued to read voraciously throughout her life. She was a particular fan of news magazines, newspapers and detective novels. She supported and worked for and with her husband at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, organizing his work, correspondence and his record keeping and being a strong sounding board, even after they both retired. Her favorite place on earth was their cottage on Bois Blanc Island in the Straights of Mackinac.
Mrs. Currier is survived her brother, Melvin H. Johnson and his wife Barbara of Battle Creek, Michigan, by her two daughters, Mary Currier Mallette and her husband Robert of Ridgeland, and Angela Currier Wymer, of Brandon. She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Lauren Tharpe, Andrew Mallette and his wife Kathryn, Daniel Mallette and his wife Jenna, Nicholas Wymer, and Alannah Wymer and four great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by us all.
Visitation will be from 10AM to 11:45AM on Saturday October 27, at St. James Episcopal Church in Jackson, with a memorial service at noon. Burial will take place next summer on Bois Blanc Island, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Currier’s name may be made to Currier-Johnson-Shaker Neurology Research Fund at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Office of Development Accounting, 2500 N.
