On Thursday, July 5, 2018 Marvin Doty, Sr. passed away at the age of 93 years. He was born on January 11, 1925. His parents were Mr. Lunkford and Mrs. Cesarea Doty. They lived in the community of Elm Grove, near Rusk, Texas.
Marvin joined the United States Army at the age of seventeen. He served in two tours, World War II and the Korean conflict. Through his military training he developed traits of punctuality that made him feel he could conquer the world.
Upon returning home, in 1952, Marvin met a young lady that led him to First Pentecostal Church, in Dallas, Texas. It was there that he was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost, under the pastorate of Elder H.J. McCracken. Having received Christ in his life, he would later answer the call to the ministry and begin preaching the gospel to everyone, beginning with his family. From that time on, the Bible patriarchs and many of the saints had a great influence on his life. Mother Bertha Butler was one of those people.
Marvin was also known for his faithful service to the church of Bethlehem Temple in Los Angeles, California. There he served for over thirty years. Having received the Lord’s calling he set out to start his own church, with the blessings of his then pastor, Bishop William L. Smith.
Over the years, Marvin was blessed to have four children: Charlotte Bell, Linda (Melvin) Dismuke, Marvin Doty (J.R.), and Undray (Magdalena) Moore. He was also blessed to have a goddaughter Wanetta Crenshaw, and his godson Brian Denmark.
Marvin’s work career was at Hughes Aircraft, where he was a dedicated employee for thirty years. During his career there he met Mr. Walter McIntyre, who became his long-time friend.
Marvin married his wife and soul mate, Bertha Harper, in 1980 that he was indeed blessed to have by his side for thirty-eight years. She cared for him valiantly, lovingly, and patiently.
His parents and three siblings preceded Marvin in death. He is survived by his wife, 4 children, 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grand children, a brother, Mr. Charles (Hazel) Doty of Jacksonville, Texas, his sisters, Mrs. Pearline Newsome of Jacksonville, Texas, Mrs. Eveline Newsome of Tucson, Arizona, Mrs. Faye Jinks of Richmond, California, and a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr & Mrs. James & Lula Lott, and many nieces and nephews, and friends. Marvin was a bold soldier in God’s army. Rest well old soldier!
From your wife, Bertha – “You were a one of kind man. You meant so much to me! Rest in the arms of Jesus, honey.”
