After an eleven month battle with cancer, Mary N. Robinson went to be with her Lord on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at the age of 65. A native of Magee, she graduated from Magee High School and attended Temple Jr. College in Texas before she married the love of her life, George (also from Magee). They travelled the world as a military family before residing in Madison, MS. After retiring, Mary continued her education at Holmes Jr. College and later graduated Sigma Cum Laude from JSU in May 2010. Before George’s death, they enjoyed travelling the country in their motorhome along with their beloved dog, D.J. and spending time with children and grandchildren when at home.
Mary will be remembered for her enormous sense of humor and infectious loving spirit. She filled every room with life, love, and especially laughter. She warmly welcomed everyone into her home and life and became a second mother to so many people who appreciated her jovial advice. She will be greatly missed. She will also be remembered for her love of church and Country. As an active member of Madison FBC and Hope Sunday School Class, she volunteered many hours to shut-ins. Having lost her only son in combat in Afghanistan she was especially proud to be recognized as a “Gold Star Mom” and dedicated much of her time comforting other mothers of fallen soldiers. She was a proud daughter of a WWI veteran, sister of two WWII veterans, and wife of a career military NCO.
She is preceded in death by her husband, RET 1SG George O. Robinson, and son, SFC Christopher L. Robinson (KIA); parents, George D. Sullivan, Sr. and DLO Dixie Sullivan; sisters, Virginia Rollison Stevens, Doris Runnels, and Anne Rooney; and brothers, John James G. D. Sullivan. She is survived by her loving daughter, Denise Robinson Schimmel (and Jason Mattiace); daughter and son-in-law, Reese and Tamara Robbins; sister, Ola S. Buntin; and brother-in-law, James E. Prince (Jennifer); mother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Hazel Jones, Nancy Hall, Theida Gibbons, Ellen Rea Blount, Patricia Blair, and Cheryl Grayson of Magee; doted-upon grandchildren, Sullivan and Britton Bufkin, Savannah Robinson Robbins, Patrick Robinson Robbins, Victoria Robbins and Caroline Schimmel; loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family extends a heart-felt thanks to the nurses and staff of 4A MBaptistMC, MS Home Care, Dr. Tammy Young, and special friends - Mary Foster and Earnestine and April Stiff. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 24, at Wright and Ferguson (Highland Colony) from 5-8 p.m. and Wednesday, January 25, at Madison FBC from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will be at Madison FBC at 11 a.m. with burial at Natchez Trace Cemetery. Per Mary’s request, a celebratory reception in honor of her fun-loving spirit, will be held immediately after services in the Northpointe Barn, Jackson, MS. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Special Operations Warrior Foundation, P. O. Box 13483, Tampa, FL 33681 (www.specialops.org)
